Our Courses

Courses created in direct response to what our members have told us they need

Based around topics that can be difficult to talk about — and are often forgotten about for adults with disabilities.

How our courses work

The courses use a facilitative approach. Learning happens through guided exploration of subjects. We create space for reflection and conversation so that participants can learn from and support each other.

Doing it this way means that as well as learning about the topic, participants also build skills such as confidence, self-reflection and an understanding of how to build supportive friendships. Our aim is that these skills will continue to help participants with their personal development even after the course has finished.

Our courses

Courses are free for get2gether members. Each one was written in response to something our members told us they needed.

Course one

Wanna talk about sex? We do!

Sex and sexual expression are a normal part of adult life, but speaking about it can often feel awkward and uncomfortable. Our members were telling us that they wanted to know more about sex and everything around it but didn’t know who to ask.

Since June 2020, we’ve been having conversations around everything from pleasure, boundaries, consent and touch, to initiating conversations with people in your life about your access to sex and sexual identity.

For our drop-in sessions, we regularly bring in guest speakers and have previously covered topics such as online dating, flirting and talking to support staff about sex. We’ve worked with Crew2000, Healthy Respect and Enhance the UK.

Will you be joining us to speak about sex? Any questions or thoughts, email rosy@get2gether.org.uk

said it was important to have a safe space, share feelings and listen to each other.

These sessions have been very healing for me, very cathartic. Just because you identify as asexual, like me, does not mean you can’t talk about sex.

Live YOUR Life

We have seen that people with disabilities (including learning disabilities) can often become stuck in a life of routine — so we wanted to develop a course that would provide people with disabilities with an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to live a more self-determined life and work through some of the issues that might be holding them back.

Working in partnership with Thistle Foundation we have developed get2gether’s Live YOUR Life course. The course is based on the researched principles of Solution Focused Therapy and brings together elements of lifestyle management, Person Centred Planning and other psychological therapies.

The course has been described by participants as “life changing” and “exactly what I needed”, leading people to not only feel more confident in the group, but also able to make changes outside the course and work towards living the life they want.

Course three

The Friendship course

Friendship can be very difficult and people find it hard trying to keep a friend. Courses coordinator Clare has written the course as a step before Let’s Talk About Sex to make a space for those conversations.

get2gether has noticed that friendship is something that everybody wants, and that most people are told from an early age to go and make friends — but not everybody is taught how to actually do it.

The course acts as a bridge between Live YOUR Life and Let’s Talk About Sex. As peer mentor Kaz puts it: “Conversations with other people is quite a skill — how to start a conversation and making the first connection with people?”

Sometimes making friends doesn’t come naturally to people, but it’s expected that everyone knows how to do it. You need to learn how to make friendships, and keep them healthy. Friendships are hard!
